Mend the Gap - Two out of three graduates in India are unemployable
According to the reports, only one out of three fresh graduates
is employable in India. The ratio shows the wide gap between our education
system and the market.
There are primarily two reasons for this.
- First is the rigidity of our education system. Courses are updated once in 7 years whereas technology changes almost every 7 months. Before the IT revolution, the job market was very conventional. So a fresh graduate with the college degree was readily employable. But today, the technology changes very fast which is not in the sync with the courses read in the colleges. That’s creates the gap. The jobs are also much more non conventional today.
- The second reason is the false impression of excellence in college students. The excellence of the students in the colleges is measured on the basis of performance in the academics. Besides having out dated courses, the students were never given the taste of the current job market and realistic conditions.
The solution is the regular update of courses and annual
compulsory internship for all college students. India is blessed with young
educated population. It is most important to ensure that this young educated
population must be employable. Otherwise in place of contributing to the
economy of the country it will contribute towards the frustration. The
government and college authorities must work towards mending this gap.
